This week, the UCU trade union (representing academic and related workers, including many students who teach as postgrads) will be taking industrial action for fairer pay in higher education. They will be on strike at universities across the country on 25th-26th May, and at the same time beginning to ‘work to rule’, which means they will refuse to work overtime, set additional work or undertake any voluntary duties like covering timetabled classes for absent colleagues.
Leicester Socialist Students supports the UCU in this strike. The fight for a fairer education system cannot be confined to one group, but must bring together students, lecturers, and all workers in FE/HE in order to fundamentally challenge the neo-liberal race to the bottom, and oppose policies that are stripping away any meaningful form of democracy in education.
Pickets will be taking place at Leicester University between 8am and 12.30 on the 25th and 26th. UCU members plan to be at the Victoria Park entrance to the campus, as well as on University Road by Entrance 1 (Danielle Brown Sports Centre) and by Entrance 2 (Students Union).
There will also be a short rally at 1pm in Victoria Park on the Wednesday.
Please join and show solidarity!
